Mary (Atwood) Rape, 85, passed away on September 18, 2017, at Sunrise of Leawood. She was born in Llano, Texas, the daughter of Carter and Emma (Talley) Atwood. Mary moved to the Kansas City area as a child. She was a 1950 graduate of Ruskin High School. It was at a Ruskin High School football game in 1949 that she first met the love of her life, Billy Joe Rape. They married in November 1950. Mary was a stay at home mom and helped her husband with his business J&J Sodding. After her children were raised, Mary went to work for GSA. She retired in 1994. Mary loved spending time with family and friends, hosting large family dinners, and making candy at Christmas for all. Her favorite vacations were spent taking kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids to Disney World and Hawaii. Preceding her in death were her husband of almost 59 years, Billy Joe Rape; son, Robert K. Rape; and brothers, Carter Atwood, Jr. and Jerry Atwood. Mary is survived by her son, Mike (Cindi) Rape; daughter, Cindy (George) Greb; brother, Pat (Janie) Atwood, of Garland, TX; sister, Lula (Kalcy) Bryant, of Irving, TX; seven grandchildren, Shaun Rape, Brian (Chris) Rape, Amanda (Carey) Jones, Angela (Jeremy) Brown, Joseph (Rachel) Greb, Kevin Rape, and Robert (Kari) Rape, Jr.; and ten great-grandchildren, Ali, April, Kyria, Madison, Chase, Connor, Neil, Jeremy, Ashlin, and Liam. Mary’s family wants to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers at Sunrise of Leawood and of Ascend Hospice for the loving support and care they gave Mary. We will celebrate her life on September 30 at The Summit Church (Lee’s Summit United Methodist), 2nd and Douglas in Lee’s Summit, MO. Visitation will be at 9am, memorial service to follow at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Ascend Hospice or the organization of your choice.
