Obituary for Barbara J. Rogers

Barbara J. Rogers
Barbara Jane Rogers, age 70, returned to her heavenly home on November 28, 2017. Although her frail body succumbed to death, Barb’s unwavering faith and ever-grateful heart were never conquered by pulmonary fibrosis. She died peacefully, at home, sharing precious final hours and tender sentiments with her devoted family.
Born in Monroe, Louisiana, to the late Bill and Margaret (Cook) Cagle on March 7, 1947, Barb grew up appreciating the value of hard work. While in high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society and worked part-time at Meadow Pharmacy’s soda fountain counter. In 1963 Barb married her high school sweetheart, Johnny Dougan, and worked at the Dumas Clarion newspaper while Johnny served a tour in Vietnam.
Although ideal in many ways, Barb’s life was not without suffering. The young couple’s beautiful child, Terry Lee, tragically died at nine-days-old. Two years after moving to Independence, Missouri, her beloved Johnny died in a motorcycle accident. A woman of steadfast faith, Barb did not allow the devastating events to harden her heart. She put her trust in our heavenly Father, and, in His mercy, she found great joy again.
While working at Western Electric, Barb met Richard (Rick) Rogers of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, exchanging vows in 1988. Their deeply loving, faith-centered marriage abundantly bore the fruits of joy. Barb shared adventures at the cabin she and Rick built on Truman Lake with her new family, boating, waterskiing and travelling over the years. Mama B, as the step-grandchildren called her, was their biggest fan at countless school events. The Lord had blessed her with a family who treasured her, and in return she shaped their lives with her patience, humor, courage and strength.
Friends and family, always welcome and greeted with generous hospitality in the Roger’s home, could easily observe Barb’s simple pleasures: a wonderful scent coming from the kitchen, needle and thread atop her latest sewing project, the Royals game playing on the television, a mystery novel next to her chair. She truly appreciated the great and small gifts God bestowed, derived pleasure from them, and was willing to share her blessings selflessly.
Barb is survived by her husband Rick; her stepson Rick (Leigh Anne) Rogers of Olathe, Kansas; her stepdaughter Robin (Rob) Todd of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; her grandchildren Trenton (Marie) Rogers, Hannah Rogers, Claire, Austin and Drew Todd; her sister Marie (Mark) Smith of Independence, Missouri; brother Bill Cagle Jr. of Dumas, AR; nieces Cindy Crapo, Elizabeth Sheffler; nephews Mark Smith Jr., and Curt Dausvik. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Bill and Margaret Cagle, sister Sue Windham, husband Johnny Dougan and son Terry Lee Dougan.
Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2 at Langsford Funeral Home, 115 SW 3rd Street, Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The Funeral service begins at 10:00 a.m., immediately followed by interment at Salem Cemetery in Independence, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Barb’s honor to Missouri Right to Life at missourilife.org.
