Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Volkert (Sullivan)

MARY ELIZABETH (SULLIVAN) VOLKERT

Mary Elizabeth Volkert passed away on June 15, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Kansas City, MO on August 13, 1947 to Blanche Lucille (Lewis) and Jeremiah Joseph Sullivan. She graduated from Bishop Hogan High School in 1966. After graduation, she married Tony Volkert who was serving in the US Air Force. During their marriage and his time in the Air Force, Mary enjoyed living in the Philippines, South Carolina, and Alaska, then finally settled back in Kansas City, MO. During their marriage they welcomed two sons, Joe and Chris, who quickly became her whole world. Mary retired from Honeywell, formerly Bendix in 1991 after suffering a stroke. While working at Bendix, one of her proudest accomplishments was her volunteer work as a tutor helping employees learn to read or improve their reading skills. She has spent the past 25 years battling many challenges associated with her stroke. But she always had a smile on her face and a wicked sense of humor. She loved to laugh. Mary never met a stranger, and was loved by all who knew her. She leaves behind her sons, Joe and his wife, Lisa and Chris and his wife, Nan; grandsons, Michael and Adam Volkert; granddaughter, Elizabeth Lancaster and her husband, Brad; and great-grandchildren, Kennadi and Cooper Lancaster. As well as several nieces and nephews and the many, many friends she has made throughout her lifetime. Mary was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and her brother, Patrick Sullivan. Visitation will be held at Langsford Funeral Home in Lee’s Summit, MO on Monday June 20th from 11-12pm. Memorial service to follow at 12:00 noon. Burial will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd. KCMO
